At some point in these last few months I’ve become a huge fan of science and an even bigger fan of astronomy than I already was. I’ve become a big doubter in religion and have started to educate myself about it. I’ve become a follower of politics and more active in equality. I know more about space and how we got here and evolution than I ever have, and I know far more about the Bible and the church and its teachings than I ever have. I know more about how politics (at least in the States) runs and how absurd it can be.
I feel I have two reasons for this.
One being I have become an avid follower of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. I used to watch them here and there and have always enjoyed them. Now every day I am tuned to Comedy to watch both.
Two being Reddit. More specifically r/Atheism. I’ve learned more about the world and myself through reddit than I ever have through any other means. I’m a firm believer that you learn and remember things much better when you’re genuinely interested in them (duh). It explains why I’d get 60’s in biology and chemistry in science class, but when astronomy rolled around, I got an 85 (I never did homework). Reddit has introduced me to Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, and most importantly; Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Now I had seen him on The Colbert Report before and even when I had no idea who he was, it was clear he was damn smart and a good speaker. Now that I really know who he is, I think I can say pretty safely that he’s at the top of my list of people that I want to meet. He’s a truly brilliant man who has piqued my interest in something so intensely that I almost feel that the age of 25 is where I finally got it. I get life. I get why I’m here and I get what’s truly amazing about that.
Once I finish my Christopher Hitchens book, I plan on getting Tyson’s newest book Space Chronicles. Never when I was 10 or in high school did I think that once I finished a book about religion being bad, would I move on to a book about space and what it has in store for us. I’ve grown a lot not only these past few years, but these past few months. I have Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Christopher Hitchens, Neil deGrasse Tyson and Reddit to thank for that.
If you read all that, I suggest heading over there. Check reddit out. Google Neil deGrasse Tyson. Start watching The Daily Show. Get out there.
